Full bail amount
The amount of financial security required by the applicable schedule or current court order. It is not the fee paid to a bond agent.

Serious Charges. Clear Answers. Real Help.
A felony arrest can bring additional release requirements, judicial review and significant bail amounts. The exact charge, county rules, warrants and court orders determine what happens next. This guide explains California felony bail bonds, with selected 2026 Los Angeles County entries and practical next steps for families.
Not every felony requires a paid bond. Confirm the current custody record, release designation and court order before discussing financial bail.

01 / Understanding felony bail
The charge is serious. The next step should be clear.
California Penal Code §17 generally defines a felony as a crime punishable by death, state imprisonment or imprisonment under §1170(h). A felony allegation does not establish guilt, and the felony label alone does not establish bail. A surety bond can secure an authorized monetary bail amount so the defendant can be released subject to court obligations; some cases instead use nonfinancial release, judicial review or lawful detention.
The amount of financial security required by the applicable schedule or current court order. It is not the fee paid to a bond agent.
The fee charged for the surety’s undertaking. Filed rates and the written agreement control; the premium is separate from the full bail amount.
A bail bond promises the defendant’s required appearances. The surety undertakes potential liability to the court for the full bond amount, subject to forfeiture law.
The booked offense, charge level, county protocol, holds and court conditions determine whether a commercial bond is relevant at all.
Charge-specific guides explain robbery, burglary and weapons allegations in more detail. For homicide allegations, distinguish manslaughter from murder before relying on any general felony example.

02 / Classification comparison
Different classifications. No automatic release outcome.
Penal Code §17 distinguishes felonies and misdemeanors by authorized punishment, not by an online label or arrest location. Some offenses are “wobblers”: the law permits either felony or misdemeanor treatment in qualifying circumstances. The actual booking, filed charge and later court decisions determine the applicable release framework.
Felony procedure can include a preliminary hearing or indictment before trial. Misdemeanor procedure generally does not use that felony probable-cause stage. Neither classification guarantees pretrial release or detention; sentencing exposure is not a bail quote.
03 / Who sets bail
Courts decide. Agents do not set or change bail.
PC §1269b
Superior Court judges adopt the countywide bail schedule. Before arraignment it supplies offense-specific amounts or release designations, subject to the schedule’s rules.
California has no single statewide felony bail amount. Use the current county document.
PC §1269b
The booking agency records the arrest, alleged offenses and release status and administers permitted release under the applicable schedule and orders.
An agency applies the applicable framework; it does not replace judicial review. Verify all charges and holds.
PC §1270.1
Covered offenses require an open-court hearing, with notice to prosecution and defense, before own-recognizance release or bail above or below the schedule. The statute includes serious and violent categories, exceptions and specified offenses such as felony §273.5.
Do not assume all felonies use the same hearing rule; the actual offense and statute matter.
PC §1275
In setting, reducing or denying bail, public and victim safety are primary considerations. The court also weighs offense seriousness, criminal history and likelihood of appearance.
Warrants, firearm or injury allegations and applicable release laws can change the decision. An agent cannot override it.
Constitutional framework
In re Humphrey (2021) requires courts to consider ability to pay and less restrictive alternatives before setting financial bail that results in detention. The California Constitution permits detention in specified circumstances and makes public and victim safety primary. Neither inability to pay nor a felony label automatically determines release.
04 / Release pathways
A paid bond is one pathway—not every pathway.
For eligible Los Angeles County CR entries, the protocol calls for citation and release without cash bail. The person receives obligations to appear; qualifying exceptions can require magistrate review instead.
No commercial bond for authorized CR releaseFor eligible BR entries, the person is booked and released on recognizance without cash bail under the local protocol. Booking and required checks still occur, and exceptions may change the pathway.
No commercial bond for authorized BR releaseAn on-call magistrate considers the submitted information and decides release and appropriate conditions. MR does not promise zero-dollar release, immediate release or a predetermined financial amount.
Wait for the magistrate’s actual decisionWhere authorized monetary conditions apply, the required security may be posted directly or through a surety bond. Serious and violent offenses can have financial schedule entries and additional hearing restrictions.
A bond may secure authorized financial bailThe LA protocol excludes crimes covered by California Constitution article I, §12(a)–(c) or §28(f)(3), or Penal Code §1270.5, from pre-arraignment release. A court must address the applicable restrictions; a bond agent cannot bypass them.
A paid bond cannot override ineligibilityThese CR/BR/MR designations describe Los Angeles County’s protocol, not a universal California system. Felony probation, parole, PRCS and defined repeated failures to appear can send otherwise CR/BR bookings to MR (2026 schedule pp. 4–7). Later judicial decisions are separate. Zero-dollar release is not generally available for serious or violent felonies.

07 / Additional requirements
One bond does not necessarily resolve every custody issue.
PC §§12022.5, 12022.53 and 12022.7 address distinct qualifying allegations. Possession, personal use, discharge and qualifying bodily injury are not interchangeable, and enhancements are not assumed merely because an arrest is a felony.
Additional counts or another case can have separate bail, hearing requirements or holds. A warrant may contain its own conditions; posting on one matter does not cancel another warrant.
Special circumstances and lawful detention orders can restrict release. Some cases require source-of-funds review or an open-court hearing before a particular release decision.
Prior serious or violent convictions may affect the applicable schedule and court assessment. The specific alleged prior matters; a criminal-history label is not a calculation.
Supervision status may trigger review or a separate hold. A new-charge bond does not automatically release someone from a supervision matter.
For covered offenses, own-recognizance release or bail above or below the schedule requires the statutory open-court hearing. This is not a rule that every felony is unbailable.
When its statutory process is invoked, the court must resolve whether security was feloniously obtained. A felony booking alone does not automatically establish such a hold.
A court may impose no-contact or other safety conditions. The defendant must obey them even after financial bail is posted.
Offense and enhancement amounts follow the official schedule’s calculation rules. Neither this guide nor an online calculator determines an individual combined bail amount.
Ask counsel and the court about the actual hold, hearing or allegation. Set Free cannot remove court conditions, dismiss charges or guarantee release.
08 / Five stages
Five stages. The record determines the pathway.
Confirm eligibility before discussing an authorized bond. Facility processing, judicial review, warrants and administrative checks can change the sequence; no release speed is guaranteed.
The booking agency records identity and alleged charges and checks warrants and supervision. A booked allegation is not a conviction.
Locate the person through official records, verify the facility, booked statute and release designation, and check all cases, holds and upcoming court decisions.
If a bond is relevant, discuss the authorized amount, filed premium, collateral and written obligations. Legal questions, reductions and required hearings belong with counsel and the court.
Where financial bail is set and posting is allowed, the surety undertaking is submitted to the appropriate authority. Acceptance on one case does not clear other holds.
The facility completes release processing and remaining checks. Attend every court date and comply with protective orders and all release conditions.
09 / Costs & responsibilities
Bail amount, premium and collateral are different obligations.
The full monetary security required by the schedule or court order. Paying a premium does not mean the defendant or co-signer can never face liability for that full amount.
California commercial premiums are commonly approximately 10% of the bond amount. This is general context, not a Set Free quote. CDI requires each surety to file its rates and its agents to charge those filed rates; the applicable rules and contract control.
Property or other security may be required separately from the premium. Ask what is pledged, how it is held and when it is released after obligations are satisfied.
If an approved written agreement allows installments, they pay the premium—not the court’s full bail amount. Confirm balances, due dates and terms; no down payment or approval is promised here.
A bond premium is generally not refunded simply because charges are dismissed or the defendant is acquitted. Cash bail and collateral have different return rules; ask about the actual contract and lawful exceptions.
An indemnity agreement can create liability for the full bond and permitted expenses if the defendant fails to appear. Read the obligations before signing.

Start with what you know.
Full legal name; date of birth or approximate age if available. These details help distinguish people with similar names; optional information stays optional on the shared form.
If known, keep the booking number and arresting agency available. They can help locate the correct record but are not required before asking for assistance.
Share the known facility and city or county of arrest, but distinguish confirmed housing from an assumption. Transfers can change the current location.
Keep the booked code sections, available bail information, case number and next hearing date if you have them. Counsel can clarify what a document means.
Have your contact details ready and ask about filed premium, collateral, approved payment terms and co-signer obligations before signing.
Track every court date, stay in contact with counsel and comply with all court conditions. Release does not end the case, and a bond does not excuse an appearance.
You do not need every record before asking for help. Keep sensitive documents private; this checklist does not collect or save answers.

No. The exact offense and applicable county and court rules may permit citation, book-and-release, magistrate-directed or other nonfinancial release. Other cases require financial security or are lawfully restricted from release. A commercial bond is relevant only when authorized monetary bail must be secured.
Sometimes, but not automatically. Serious and violent classification can trigger financial entries, required hearings and constitutional restrictions. The actual charge, evidence and court order govern; a schedule amount by itself is not a promise of release.
No. Superior Courts adopt county schedules and judicial officers make individualized decisions. The selected figures on this page are from the 2026 Los Angeles County pre-arraignment schedule, not statewide amounts.
The court can make or modify a lawful bail decision. Counsel can request review and explain the required procedure. A booking record may initially apply the schedule, but a bond agent cannot independently raise, lower or cancel court-ordered bail.
In Los Angeles County, MR refers the booking to a magistrate to consider release and conditions. It is not a fixed amount, a guaranteed zero-dollar release or an automatic requirement to buy a bond. Confirm the actual magistrate decision.
The warrant may involve a separate case, bail term or custody restriction. Posting a bond on the new felony does not automatically clear it. Ask which authority issued the warrant and obtain the current court instructions.
Counsel can ask for review. Courts must consider ability to pay and less restrictive alternatives under In re Humphrey while applying safety considerations and legal restrictions. A reduction or nonfinancial release is not guaranteed; covered offenses require the statutory hearing.
The full bail amount is the monetary undertaking required for appearance. The premium is the fee charged for the surety bond, commonly approximately 10% in general California practice but subject to the applicable filed rate and rules. This page does not quote Set Free’s actual rate.
Not necessarily. At an assumed 10% premium, the educational calculation is $5,000. That illustration is not a quotation. Collateral and contractual liability are separate, and the co-signer may face responsibility for the full bond if obligations are breached.
There is no universal answer. The surety and written agreement determine whether collateral is required and what is acceptable. Ask how the property will be held, what obligations it secures and when it can be returned; no collateral-free promise is made here.
Generally, the premium is not refunded simply because the case is dismissed or ends in acquittal. Cash deposited directly with the court and collateral have different rules. Review the agreement and ask about applicable exceptions before paying.
An approved written payment agreement may spread the premium over time. Availability, initial payment and terms vary; approval and any discount are not guaranteed. A payment plan does not reduce the court’s bail amount or eliminate indemnity obligations.
The court may issue a warrant and declare the bond forfeited, subject to statutory procedures and deadlines. The defendant and co-signer should promptly contact counsel and the bond agent. Do not assume a later appearance automatically resolves the warrant or forfeiture.
Facility processing, another case, a warrant, a supervision hold, source-of-funds review or a court restriction may still apply. Posting must be authorized and accepted; a bond on one case cannot bypass another custody basis. Release timing varies.
Start with the person’s legal name, known city or county of arrest and your contact details. Date of birth, booking number, agency, facility and court information help if available, but you do not need every record before asking. The existing three-step form keeps optional details optional.
